Fascinating insights into the music business of the sixties and seventies
- 12/05/2023
Having worked in the radio broadcast industry for a few years (early in my career) I'd long been aware of the KPM, Chappell and other music libraries, but to be honest never paid the material very much mind. That changed recently when I chanced upon a track by Syd Dale (Central Park Parade) which was familiar from my BBC R2 days (John Dunn program closing). nostalgia and curiosity thus triggered, I started to look for other Syd Dale material - and found in particular the Amphonic "London Life" LP (though on-line only, alas) and one of the first KPM 1000 series discs - KPM1002, The Sounds of Syd Dale. By now thoroughly hooked, I started searching for what music I COULD buy (in decent quality) and landed here on the Vocalion site. Too bad there's presently only a small fraction of Syd's music available at the moment! But on to the book, which I bought as a bit of a "chance" purchase. So glad I did; it's a fascinating read, packed full of insights not only into the world and heyday of library music itself, but also paints a vivid picture of the London music industry in the 60's and 70's. Lots of unexpected connections to household names as well as finally giving credit to so many brilliant musicians, arrangers, performers and the people who made it all happen.
