HAYDN/BERNSTEIN
- 03/05/2025
The Concert That Stuck A Conducting Stick in Richard Nixon's Eye!!!
- 09/11/2018
In January of 1973, Leonard Bernstein led a concert with Haydn's "Mass In Time of War" at the Washington National Cathedral, as a protest to the re-election of Richard Nixon, Republican crook, who would resign the Presidency of the United States in 1974, threatened with impeachment.

15,000 people showed up to hear that protest concert, while Nixon had a concert at the Kennedy Center, with Eugene Ormandy and the Philadelphia Orchestra, featuring Nixon's favorite, the "1812 Overture". Many Americans hated the "gaucherie" of that Nixon concert, due to the ongoing Vietnam meat grinding war.

All the musicians and choristers at the "Concert for Peace" were volunteers, including players from the National Symphony in Washington, disrespected by Nixon's Inaugural Committee, having chosen an orchestra from outside Washington.

The performance on this disc captures the cavernous acoustic of the cathedral, are quite lovely. All performers were quite motivated by the moment and events, so this disc is an astonishing memento of resistance in the United States. Bernstein always captured the spirit and humor of Haydn in his performances, and this one is true to his love of Haydn.

The Symphony No. 96 is a lovely bonus with the New York Philharmonic in top form!!!
