Harmony/The Way We Were SACD
- 08/07/2019
Thanks again for releasing more of Ray Conniff on SACD multichannel, this time Harmony/The Way We Were. The vocals and instruments placements on these two albums are simply excellent!
Thanks for a superb SACD mastering.

My wish is that "I Can See Clearly Now" will be released in an SACD mastered CD.

Great Easy Listening - Top Notch Multichannel & Stereo Mixes
- 04/08/2023
Have many fond memories of Ray Conniff, going back to the 1970s when Ray Conniff records were a stalwart on easy listening BBC Radio 2, and invariably sounded spectacular in FM Stereo.

Ray Conniff apparently recorded 12 quadraphonic albums, of which 10 are available in five two-fers (at time of writing) from Dutton Vocalion. Harmony & The Day We Were is a terrific example, the songs are all great, with many standouts including the wistful 'How Can I Tell Her', a bouncy pair of Dawn numbers (Gypsy Rose/Strawberry Patch) with Ray himself on the trombone, Here Today and Gone Tomorrow an original composition by Ray Conniff, Paper Roses (see my quad notes), and a beautiful rendition of Beyond Tomorrow.

The quad sound is particularly spectacular, as the notes explained the vocals were grouped tonally, with two sets of female singers left front and back, and two sets of male singers right front and back. This produces a very immersive quad effect. Paper Roses includes an anticlockwise harmony effect at various points: - i.e. each group singing ‘Roses' in turn - great for demonstrating quad to new acquaintances to the medium.

The SACD stereo mix is very different, and sounds great with just the two channels. As well as different instrument emphasise, the two male groups are now left and right, ditto the female groups - this works very well in two channels. The 'roses' harmony for example now bounces back and forth between left and right.

Both the multichannel and stereo mixes are top notch in sound quality, this combined with great easy listening songs, performed in the distinct Ray Conniff style makes this a thoroughly recommended SACD.
