There was much great music performed in old classic films. It was fortuitous that in the mid-70s, many of these pieces were re-recorded when quad was in vogue. Furthermore, these were conducted by the great Charles Gerhardt, with a top form National Philharmonic Orchestra, and recorded in the iconic Kingsway Hall culminates in an iconic set of recordings.

This SACD of Dimitri Tiomkin is an excellent collection of some of his finest works. Lost Horizon is truly an iconic suite of haunting and spectacular music from the classic 1937 film. The quad mix truly opens the room up to an atmospheric immersive experience, primarily ambient, but with some instruments appearing at rear.

The Guns of Navarone track is a brash lively piece with some amazingly deep bass notes. The other pieces are varied and all have their musical merit and sounds good. The bonus track ‘The Thing From Outer Space’ is eclectic, full of 1950s Sci-Fi inspired sounds, and uses quad in a flamboyant immersive way.

For the whole disc the stereo mix is fine; but all the music really opens up to another level in quadrophonic.

This is a spectacular recording, not only for the evocative "Lost Horizon" but also for the eerie, atmospheric "Thing From Another World". Tiomkin employed the Theremin [played by Dr Samuel Hoffmann] in this film. However, in this album, Ondes Martinot has been substituted. The sounds are similar enough. Highly Recommended.
