When John Wilson and His Orchestra were giving their annual Prom Concerts of Broadway and Hollywood music I rather hoped we would get a Concert devoted to 20th Century-Fox. After all he had covered MGM and Warner Bros. However this was not to be and he moved on to other projects. That’s why the appearance of this set was not only a surprise but a blessing. The singers are obviously at home with this material and perform it as if born to it. I hate to single anyone out for praise (they are all so good) but Clare Teal channels Alice Faye to perfection in ‘No Love, No Nuthin’ and ‘A Journey to a Star’. The BBC Concert Orchestra under David Charles Abell swings with all the appropriate swagger and the BBC Singers provide the necessary support. I would highly recommend this set to anyone who relishes good music well performed. I must admit I had never heard of Derek Greten-Harrison before but his restoration of the original scores and arrangements is to be praised – he’s a darn good singer as well!
