It is fortuitous that quadrophonic sound was in vogue in the 1970s, as so much iconic music was recorded then from a variety of genres.

The seventies of course were a decade when disco soul music was popular, and this Dutton Vocalion twofer contains two of the best albums featuring the Philadelphia soul sound from Harold Melvin and the Blue Notes.

A well-presented SACD with a comprehensive booklet and nicely executed combo album cover. Musically a great disc for soul lovers, with tracks ranging from good to brilliant. A neutrally balanced and refined sound, as normally the case with Michael Dutton mastered recordings.

The quadrophonic mix is not a spectacular gimmicky example more ambient than immersive, but vocals and additional instruments clearly emerge from the rear channel speakers on occasion (towards the end on some tracks), and the overall mix sounds pleasantly natural.

Overall a great sounding SACD featuring iconic soul music.

The Philadelphia International label produced some of the greatest soul music of the 1970s. Iconic recordings by the O'Jays, Billy Paul, The Three Degrees MFSB and of course Harold Melvin and the Bluenotes. This disc features 2 terrific albums from 74 & 75. The lush orchestral arrangements never sounded better with so much spaciousness that allows each instrument room to be heard. I really do hope that there are further rereleases from the Philly back catalogue.
