Miss Jacoby has the chops for Shostakovich's neurotic, hyperactive, sometimes eccentric mood changes. Maestro Mackerras, with his dual affinities for Mozart and Janaček finds a perfect mating of both in Shostakovich's orchestration. The music-making here is expressive where it should be, light, quick, and playful where called for, and always cleanly balanced on a keen razor's edge. The piano tone has a pleasant body and heft appropriate to the music, properly matching the orchestra's firm, solid tone.
